How I Fell In Love with Artisan, Handmade Products

Inside a vintage or second hand store

Back in the day when I was a teenager, on a low budget and with time to spare, I was irresistibly drawn to craft fairs, flea markets and tucked away shops full of higgeldy-piggeldy items selling "old stuff" and handmade products. Back then, of course, I didn´t have a home of my own to fill, so my obsession was clothes rather than home décor.

The concept and classification of vintage didn´t exist back then. These were just second hand shops to most people, usually a little off the beaten track, run by slightly eccentric, quirky individuals and with whom I became quite familiar and friendly. And unlike their vintage cousins of today, they were very budget friendly.

But to me these weren´t just thrift stores; these places were magical, more akin to an Aladdin´s Cave of treasures yet to be unearthed. They were stuffed full of eclectic costume jewellery, crocodile handbags and beautifully tailored clothes from bygone, glamorous eras, created using an artisanal production process that used gorgeous, real fabrics like chiffons and silks that, disappointingly, had been replaced by cheap synthetic materials in the mass market world. The thrill of chancing upon something unique, beautiful products that had had a previous life in the hands of someone else generations before mine, and which incredibly, were often still in mint condition, was exciting, wondrous and deeply satisfying.

We now live in a world even more dominated by mass production, with prices sometimes so cheap you really have to wonder about the production processes and working conditions of the people behind the items. And despite having had a corporate career that never had anything to do with the artisan world, the attraction to artisanal products never left me. On trips to the Middle East and North Africa I would seek out traditional crafts and the skilled artisans behind them. I adored the Arab culture and style and it fused well with a long-term, enduring love for Spain and Hispanic culture and a fascination with the era of that cultural melting pot that was once Al-Andalus. These came to be the drivers behind Andaluchic, with a focus on Arabic design and Moroccan home decor.

Rummaging About and The Thrill of Discovery

The excitement of stumbling upon hidden gems can´t be underestimated, exquisite items that have been crafted by human hands. I suppose it is akin to bagging a great bargain. It sets off the same psychological response and headiness but with the even greater thrill of the discovery of the unknown. Each handmade product tells a story, and this element of surprise makes the shopping experience truly unique. Artisanal products can move us emotionally as, having that very human touch, we perceive them to be full of love.

These feelings are true whether you´re buying something for yourself or, as in the case of owning a small business, buying for prospective customers.

From Hobby to Business

Carpet souk in Morocco

The very first time we went in search of local artisans and Moroccan design, we crossed the ferry from Spain to Morocco and set off on a train to Fez with 2 large suitcases. It felt like we had stepped back in time. The smells and the sounds were so different, the vibrant color palette, the pace frenetic. We spent day after day trudging around the newer of the two souks in Fez (the newer one only dates back to the 13th Century, so by anyone else´s standards, not new at all!) meeting countless artisans and trying to avoid bumping into donkeys or being dragged into carpet shops. It was stimulating, heady and somewhat overwhelming. By dusk we were exhausted.

So Why Are Artisan Products Important? It all comes down to their Authenticity and Originality

Artisanal products possess an unmatched authenticity and originality. Unlike mass-produced items, which, let´s face it, are really about making fast money, each piece is carefully crafted by a skilled artisan who pours their passion, knowledge and expertise into their creations. From hand-woven textiles to intricately punched copperwork, these products carry a sense of authenticity and artistry that cannot be replicated by a machine. The skills are inherent to the artisan, having been handed down from one generation to the next, usually by a family member. Owning an artisan handmade item means owning something unique and special, something that is more than the sum of it´s parts.

Where Did All The Artisans Go? Supporting Artisan Communities

We forget that, in the not so distant past, many of our own ancestors would have been artisans; but their skills and knowledge became less relevant from the Industrial Revolution onwards, as machines worked faster, more efficiently and more profitably. Even in Al-Andalus there was a disruption to the weaving industry, when weaving machines with pedals were introduced by the conquering Arabs. Up to this point, the shuttle had to be manually pushed back to the other side of the loom to continue weaving: the pedals made the shuttle job redundant (and this caused a lot of upset). The weaving process became faster and more efficient.

In an era driven by mass production and consumerism, the significance of supporting artisan communities cannot be emphasized enough. These communities are often found in remote areas, where traditional craft skills have been passed down through generations. However, with the rise of globalization and mechanization, many artisans have struggled to sustain their craft and livelihoods.

Fortunately, a growing movement of conscious consumers has recognized the value of supporting and preserving these artisan communities. By purchasing handmade goods, individuals are not only investing in unique and high-quality products but also contributing to the socio-economic development of these communities.

When we choose to support artisan communities, we contribute to the preservation of traditional craftsmanship and cultural heritage. These artisans often use age-old techniques and materials that have been passed down for centuries. By purchasing their products, we help ensure the continuation of these craft techniques, preventing them from being lost or forgotten in the modern world.

Moreover, supporting artisan communities has a positive impact on local economies. Many craft workers operate on a small scale and rely on their craft as a primary source of income. By purchasing their handmade goods, we provide them with a sustainable livelihood and help create employment opportunities within their communities. This, in turn, promotes income streams and economic growth in a micro - economy, helping to reduce poverty.

This direct connection with the creators not only contributes to a deeper overall experience but also benefits local communities rather than being sucked up and out into the pockets of a big corporation. And we all know, the gains rarely dribble down as promised.

Durability and Quality; It´s Made To Last

One of the reasons why I fell in love with artisan handmade goods is their unmatched durability and quality. When you purchase a handmade item, you can be confident that it has been crafted with meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to using only the finest materials.

Unlike mass-produced products, which are often made with cost-cutting measures and synthetic materials, artisan handmade products prioritize quality over quantity. Artisans take the time to carefully select their materials, ensuring that they are of the highest caliber. Whether it's wall décor, a piece of clothing or glass art, you can be sure that it has been crafted to withstand the test of time. With mass-produced products, it's not uncommon to find flaws or weaknesses after just a short period of use.

On the other hand, artisanal products and handmade goods are built to last. The artisans' dedication to their craft means that they take the time to create sturdy and well-made products that will endure for years, if not generations, to come. There is something truly special about owning an item that has been meticulously crafted by hand. The attention to detail and craftsmanship that goes into each piece is apparent, giving the item a unique character and charm that you simply can't find in mass-produced items.

These timeless pieces also have a scarcity value, as the low impact production methods used makes it impossible for them to be created en-masse.

Why People Love a Handmade Gift

When it comes to gift-giving, handmade goods hold a special place in our hearts. There is a certain joy in giving and receiving a gift that has been carefully crafted by an artisan's skilled hands.

Firstly, a handmade gift carries a personal touch. Knowing that someone has spent hours designing and creating a unique item specifically for you adds a level of thoughtfulness and sentimentality that can't be replicated by store-bought presents. Whether it's a hand-woven pashmina, a hand crafted bag or an artisan made piece of jewelry, the recipient can feel the love and effort put into each fibre, stitch or soldered precious metal.

Additionally, handmade gifts often come with a story. The process of making a handmade item involves passion, inspiration, and intention. Artisans pour their heart and soul into their craft, and each creation is a reflection of their personal journey. When you give a handmade gift, you are not only giving an object but also a story that can be shared and cherished for years to come.

Furthermore, handmade gifts are unique and one-of-a-kind. In a world saturated with mass-produced products, receiving something that is hard to replicate is truly special.

Cultivating a Personal Connection

Perhaps one of my favorite aspects of acquiring an artisan made item is that each piece bears the invisible stamp of the artisan's soul and passion for his or her work within it.

By purchasing artisan made pieces, you´re not just acquiring a product, you´re engaging in a personal connection. By investing in the product, you´re investing in the artisan. I love knowing the story behind each creation, understanding the techniques employed and appreciating the cultural significance embedded in every twist and cut.

This connection with the artisan and their craft skills, in turn, deepens the love and respect for these handmade goods.

In the part of the world where we operate, it used to be rare to see women with a craft business creating Moroccan décor, unless tucked away at home, out of sight. But in more recent years there has been more emphasis on education, on the education of women, their acceptance in the workplace and participation into the artisan world. They bring with them a new perspective, new ideas and creativity. They also help to preserve traditions and skills, marrying these with updated ideas and processes.

Mix and Match: It´s OK To Blend The Artisan with the Mass Produced

Interior with selected artisan pieces

In a world dominated by mass-produced products, it's easy to overlook the value of artisan handmade goods. But there´s a growing trend of mixing and matching these two worlds, allowing for a harmonious blend of unique craftsmanship and modern convenience.

A big reason to love handmade goods is because they bring a sense of authenticity and individuality to an overall style. By incorporating handcrafted pieces into your wardrobe or decorative items into your home interior, you´re adding a personal touch that sets you apart from mass-produced trends. It's a way to showcase your personality and express your creativity in a world that often promotes sameness.

Mixing artisanal goods with mass-produced items also allows for a balance between craftsmanship and affordability, a very genuine and important consideration. While artisan products may come with a higher price tag due to the time and skill involved in creating them, they also offer unparalleled quality and longevity.

By investing in a few key artisan pieces, such as a hand-stitched leather bag, a handmade jewelry or a hand-crafted light with geometric patterns or horse shoe arch mirror, you can elevate your personal style and home décor without breaking the bank.
