How I Fell In Love with Artisan, Handmade Products
Back in the day when I was a teenager, on a low budget and with time to spare, I was irresistibly drawn to craft fairs, flea markets and tucked away shops full of higgeldy-piggeldy items selling "old stuff" and handmade products. Back then, of course, I didn´t have a home of my own to fill, so my obsession was clothes rather than home décor.
The concept and classification of vintage didn´t exist back then. These were just second hand shops to most people, usually a little off the beaten track, run by slightly eccentric, quirky individuals and with whom I became quite familiar and friendly. And unlike their vintage cousins of today, they were very budget friendly.
But to me these weren´t just thrift stores; these places were magical, more akin to an Aladdin´s Cave of treasures yet to be unearthed. They were stuffed full of eclectic costume jewellery, crocodile handbags and beautifully tailored clothes from bygone, glamorous eras, created using an artisanal production process that used gorgeous, real fabrics like chiffons and silks that, disappointingly, had been replaced by cheap synthetic materials in the mass market world. The thrill of chancing upon something unique, beautiful products that had had a previous life in the hands of someone else generations before mine, and which incredibly, were often still in mint condition, was exciting, wondrous and deeply satisfying.
We now live in a world even more dominated by mass production, with prices sometimes so cheap you really have to wonder about the production processes and working conditions of the people behind the items. And despite having had a corporate career that never had anything to do with the artisan world, the attraction to artisanal products never left me. On trips to the Middle East and North Africa I would seek out traditional crafts and the skilled artisans behind them. I adored the Arab culture and style and it fused well with a long-term, enduring love for Spain and Hispanic culture and a fascination with the era of that cultural melting pot that was once Al-Andalus. These came to be the drivers behind Andaluchic,with a focus on Arabic design and Moroccan home decor.
Rummaging About and The Thrill of Discovery
The excitement of stumbling upon hidden gems can´t be underestimated, exquisite items that have been crafted by human hands. I suppose it is akin to bagging a great bargain. It sets off the same psychological response and headiness but with the even greater thrill of the discovery of the unknown. Each handmade product tells a story, and this element of surprise makes the shopping experience truly unique. Artisanal products can move us emotionally as, having that very human touch, we perceive them to be full of love.
These feelings are true whether you´re buying something for yourself or, as in the case of owning a small business, buying for prospective customers.
From Hobby to Business
The very first time we went in search of local artisans and Moroccan design, we crossed the ferry from Spain to Morocco and set off on a train to Fez with 2 large suitcases. It felt like we had stepped back in time. The smells and the sounds were so different, the vibrant color palette, the pace frenetic. We spent day after day trudging around the newer of the two souks in Fez (the newer one only dates back to the 13th Century, so by anyone else´s standards, not new at all!) meeting countless artisans and trying to avoid bumping into donkeys or being dragged into carpet shops. It was stimulating, heady and somewhat overwhelming. By dusk we were exhausted.

Even in Al-Andalus there was a disruption to the weaving industry, when weaving machines with pedals were introduced by the conquering Arabs. Up to this point, the shuttle had to be manually pushed back to the other side of the loom to continue weaving: the pedals made the shuttle job redundant (and this caused a lot of upset). The weaving process became faster and more efficient.

In the part of the world where we operate, it used to be rare to see women with a craft business creating Moroccan décor, unless tucked away at home, out of sight. But in more recent years there has been more emphasis on education, on the education of women, their acceptance in the workplace and participation into the artisan world. They bring with them a new perspective, new ideas and creativity. They also help to preserve traditions and skills, marrying these with updated ideas and processes.
